『ビラヴド』トニ・モリスン　その10

今日は久しぶりに、妻と映画を見てきました。

「Blindspotting」というカリフォルニア州オークランドが舞台の物語です。

主人公はコリンという名の黒人男。彼は保護観察期間中なんですが、その最後の３日間に、マイルズというヤンチャな白人友達が銃を購入したり暴れまわったり、白人警官による黒人射殺を目撃してしまったり、いろいろなことが起こります。はてさて、コリンの保護観察は無事に終了するのか、というのがメインのフックになっているストーリーでした。

肌の色も大きなテーマのひとつです。それに対し、主人公もいいのですが、どうしようもない友人マイルズの心の揺れ具合いがよく描かれていて、妻とともに「いい映画をみたなー」と大満足で映画館をあとにしました。

さて、ここからは、学校の課題で書いた英語エッセイを振り返りながら、ああだこうだ言ってみる企画の続編です。

ノーベル文学賞受賞作家であるトニ・モリスンの代表作『ビラヴド』にまつわるエッセイを取り上げています。今回が一応、最終回ということになります。

In an earlier conversation between Sethe and Denver, Sethe’s little magical way of looking at the world was revealed.

“I mean, even if I don’t think it, even if I die, the picture of what I did, or knew, or saw is still out there. Right in the place where it happened.”
“Can other people see it?” asked Denver.
“Oh, yes. Oh, yes, yes, yes. Someday you be walking down the road and you hear something or see something going on. So Clear. And you think it’s you thinking it up. A thought picture. But no. It’s when you bump into a rememory that belongs to somebody else (Morrison, 43).

Hopefully, the world is filled up with Mr. Bodwin’s type of rememories, and not the other type, for Denver and her family and for us as well.

最後にオマケです。蛇足です。

僕のエッセイに対していつも好意的な評価を与えてくれていたＪ先生にも、このセクションはスルーされてしまいました（苦笑）

それでも僕はこれを付け加えた。

善かれ悪しかれ、なにかしらの味わいが出てればいいのだけれど。

なぜこれを付け加えたかというと、何よりも、物語のこのパートがとても好きだったからです。

だから、仕方がなかったのです。これが、このエッセイの末尾にふさわしくないとしても、ここに吐き出すしか治めようがなかったのですから。

クレイジーになる前の、とても頼り甲斐のあるセサが、常識とはちょっと異なる道理を語るシーンです。

その内容が、ちょうどいい具合いにマジカルで素敵です。

「誰かが生きた経験ってのは、その場所に残って、他の人が差し掛かったときに再生されるんだ。

新たにその場所にやってきた人は、自分がそれを思い描いているのかと思うのだけど、違うんだよ。

実はそれは、誰か別の人のリメモリーにぶち当たって追体験しているってことなんだ」
